I'm currently writing picture books, poetry and junior fiction. I'm published with The School Magazine (children’s poetry and short story), Eucalypt: a tanka journal (poetry), Poetica Christi Press (poetry) and created two picture books for Barker College, Hornsby. I was long-listed for the CBCA Aspiring Writers Mentorship Program 2019 (picture book manuscript), and in 2020 received 3rd Prize for another of my picture book manuscripts in CYA 2020 Conference Competition - Aspiring-2 - Picture Book - Primary School category. I am short-listed with two poems in the Threatened Treasures Poetry Anthology.
My ‘Magpie’ poem and illustration was published in The School Magazine (Countdown, Issue no.10, November 2022). This was inspired by watching a family of magpies strutting around on the lawn, searching for tasty snacks. They appeared to be successful every time! I had fun creating and designing this poem and illustration digitally.
This issue of The School Magazine - Blast Off includes my short story for Christmas, Something from Nothing, a retelling of a Ukrainian folk-tale. It’s filled with little creatures, magical Christmas decorations and of course Christmas cheer.
My poem Drummer on the Roof features in this issue. The rhythmic sounds of heavy rain on a tin roof…
The School Magazine Countdown August 2013 Issue no.7 features my poem, Drummer on the Roof.
My poem Bushman's Clock appears in the Countdown July 2019 issue no.6 of The School Magazine.
My poem Bushman’s Clock features in this issue of The School Magazine. It’s about the joys of being woken by laughing kookaburras - the famous ‘clock’ of the bushman.
"What makes a great book?" CBCA (Children's Book Council of Australia) asked Members for their thoughts on this, during the lead up to 'Book Week' in August 2015. My response:
'With words and pictures, words alone, or no words at all,
I climbed thyme-filled hills and cantered through a midnight forest
I felt the pain of leaving home and knew the colours of one child's dreams
I laughed with those whose mistakes were also my own
And wondered anew at life.' © Y.Low
